NHS Northamptonshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) is delighted to announce the appointment of two Directors of Nursing – Fiona Barnes and Mandy Staples.

These crucial roles will help support the delivery of the four aims of the ICB, with a real focus on improving outcomes and reducing inequality for our population.

One of the roles will focus specifically on vulnerabilities and the other on quality and safety. Both Fiona and Mandy come with a wealth of experience which will be invaluable for our system.

Fiona has worked in the NHS for more than 30 years and has a breadth of experience from working across a number of acute hospital settings. Having qualified in 1988 in Plymouth, Fiona moved to Oxford University Hospitals, where her career progressed over a number of years, having undertook operational, strategic and educational roles, culminating in Fiona being promoted to Deputy Chief Nurse.

Fiona has worked at Northampton General Hospital as Deputy Director of Nursing and completed a successful secondment at Southport & Ormskirk NHS Trust to support the professional standards, education and workforce agenda. Fiona joined Kettering General Hospital (FT) as the Director of Nursing, Midwifery, AHP and Quality (interim) in September 2021 and has led on a number of operational, strategic and workforce initiatives.

Fiona said: “Having worked within both acute trusts in Northamptonshire over the last few years I can bring my knowledge and experience to support our ICB in a variety of initiatives. I am very much looking forward to being part of the ICB at this exciting time and leading on collaborative approaches to improving patient health and care across the System.”

Mandy has been a Registered General Nurse for over 20 years. She is joining the ICB from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG/ICB where she has been the Deputy Chief Nurse for the last three years, providing Senior Clinical Leadership to improve quality and safe standards of care.

She has extensive clinical experience in the field of District Nursing and working with adults and children with complex care in the community and has worked in a variety of settings including the charitable, military, and independent sectors during her career. During the COVID-19 vaccination programme, Mandy was instrumental in delivering services to the public with active redeployment throughout and has also worked in operations in urgent emergency care to develop pathways to support system flow.

Mandy said: “I am delighted to be joining Northamptonshire ICB and am looking forward to help shape services and enhance care for the people of Northamptonshire. I am a key advocate of compassionate and inclusive leadership as being fundamental to raising and improving quality standards in health care and am looking forward to being part of the leadership team that helps to drive the quality agenda forward.”

Fiona is commencing in her new role on 13 March and Mandy on 8 May.
