Putting children and young people at the heart of our work

Why are children and young people a priority?

The health and wellbeing of children and young people is determined by far more than healthcare. There is a full range of other factors that can impact a young person’s health and life chances, including education, housing and family life, which is why partnership working is essential.

The first few years of a child’s life will affect their health and care outcomes for the rest of their life. Getting it right early on can have a lifelong impact on communities, which is why this area is one of our priorities. We have identified a need to be clearer on what we want to achieve to improve care, support and outcomes for children and young people throughout the county.

The story so far…

Services for children and young people in Northamptonshire have committed to work together to improve care, support and outcomes for children and young people throughout the county. They have collaborated to support the evolution of services for children and young people, creating a focused environment to make it easier for change to take shape.

What’s next?

We are committed to delivering better health outcomes for children and young people in our community.

  • Children, young people and their families will be able to thrive in Northamptonshire, getting the right information and the right help, at the right time in the right place
  • We will work together to ensure children, their families and carers understand the types of support services available to them and how to access them
  • We pledge to fulfil Northamptonshire’s Children’s Charter to put children, young people and their families at the heart of our services with a strong voice
  • Together we will work with children and their families to help them choose healthy active lifestyles and behaviours to help them thrive
  • Our ambition is that children with complex needs are able to live their best lives
  • Children and young people will be given the tools to care for their own wellbeing and get the right help they need when they need it
  • We will work together to equip all of our children and young people with the right tools to help them into adulthood.

Northamptonshire Children and Young People Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Transformation Plan

It is with great pleasure that Integrated Care Northamptonshire shares the 2023/24 refresh of the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Local Transformation Plan.

This plan captures the wide-ranging and innovative ways in which our system has continued to adapt to the complexities of increasing demand and acuity of presenting needs of our children and young people. It also details our progress against national targets and objectives articulated in last year’s plan, within a challenging financial environment. The plan shares our agreed system priorities for 2024/25 and outlines the vision for continued excellence and improvement.

The outstanding commitment to collaborative and creative ways of working has been highlighted this year by the inclusion of a six-part mini-video series, designed by our children and young people. We hope this will anchor the foundations of authentic co-production with our young people and provide them with the voice they deserve. Our mini-video series, together with the easy read version of our plan, will serve us well in ensuring that their experiences will never be lost, that their voices matter and that they, with us, continue to develop and shape our services to meet their needs.

We would like to thank all system partners, both NHS and voluntary sector, Northamptonshire Children’s Trust, public health, education, youth justice and police teams and both our local authorities for their contributions.

Particular thanks go to NHFT’s Children and Young People Participation Team and the young people who gave their time and energy to this plan. We are delighted to have been able to witness your dedication and passion in working with us to ensure everyone is supported to achieve their very best outcomes in life.
